Questions and answers

How Brewhall builds a deck, and what to do with it afterwards.

What is Brewhall?

Brewhall is a free Commander deck builder. You pick a commander and a power bracket, and it puts together a full 100-card deck: your commander, 62 spells and 37 lands. You can also let it pick a random commander by colour, guild or theme. It's a small, independent project run from the UK.

Is it AI?

No. Brewhall works from rules, not a language model. For each role a deck needs (ramp, card draw, removal, protection, synergy, win conditions and utility) it searches Scryfall for cards that fit your commander's colours, ranks them by how often Commander players run them, and takes the number that your bracket calls for. That's why it never invents a card or puts in two copies of the same one.

With Inspired by real decks on, each role starts from the cards that real decks with your commander actually run, most played first, using EDHREC's figures. If EDHREC doesn't know the commander or can't be reached, Brewhall builds the usual way.

Every card is legal in Commander according to Scryfall, fits your commander's colour identity, and appears once (basic lands aside). If Scryfall can't return enough cards for a narrow theme or colour pair, Brewhall fills the gap with extra basic lands and tells you, rather than leaving the deck short.

What do the brackets change?

Two things. First, Brewhall follows Wizards' official Commander bracket rules for what a deck may include:

BracketGame ChangersMass land denialExtra turnsTwo-card combos
1. ExhibitionNoneNoneNoneNone
2. CoreNoneNoneOne at mostNone
3. UpgradedUp to 3NoneOne at mostNone
4. OptimizedAnyAllowedAllowedAllowed
5. cEDHAnyAllowedAllowedAllowed

The Game Changers list comes live from Scryfall, so it's always the current one. If your commander is itself a Game Changer, the deck can't be bracket 1 or 2, and the results page says so. Mass land denial means well-known cards like Armageddon, Blood Moon and Winter Orb. The official rules allow a few extra turns as long as they don't chain, and Brewhall keeps it to one so they can't. They also allow two-card combos in bracket 3 if they only come together late in the game. Brewhall can't tell early from late, so it leaves them out of bracket 3 altogether.

Combos are checked with Commander Spellbook once the deck is built. If it finds one, Brewhall swaps one of the two cards for another that does the same job. Every results page has a Bracket rules panel showing what was checked.

Second, the bracket sets the mix of the deck. Higher brackets get more ramp, removal and protection, and fewer slots for fun or flavourful cards.

Where do prices come from?

From Scryfall, which takes dollar prices from TCGplayer and euro prices from Cardmarket. Choose the one you buy from on the brew page. Basic lands aren't priced or counted, since most players already have plenty.

How does the budget work?

Type a total and Brewhall spreads it across the deck. No single card takes more than about a fifth of it, and once every slot is filled it spends what's left on stronger cards. If the deck still ends up over, the results page says by how much and why: usually a commander that costs more than the budget on its own. Leave the budget blank and it reaches for the stronger, pricier staples.

Can it use my own cards?

Yes. Open Collection and import a CSV export from ManaBox, Moxfield or a similar site, or paste a list with one card per line, like 1 Sol Ring. Then turn on Build from my collection on the brew page. Decks use only cards you own where they can. Any card you'd still need is marked NEED, and a short list suggests a few pickups for the roles your collection is light on.

Can I change cards?

Tap any spell in a fresh deck and Brewhall offers three alternatives that fill the same role. Pick one to swap it in. The card you swapped out goes back on the list, so you can change your mind.

Can I take a deck to Moxfield or Archidekt?

Yes. Under every deck there are buttons to copy it for Moxfield, Archidekt or a Cardmarket wants list.

Moxfield

Make a new Commander deck, choose Import, paste, and pick your commander in the import dialog.

Archidekt

Make a new deck, choose Import, and paste. Your commander goes into the command zone and the cards arrive sorted into the same roles as on Brewhall.

Cardmarket

Paste into a new wants list to see what the cards cost from sellers near you. For a collection build, the button copies only the cards you don't own.

Can I share a deck?

Yes, once it's saved. In My decks, press Share and Brewhall copies a link. Anyone who opens it sees the deck and can copy it to Moxfield or Archidekt, but can't change it or see who made it. Press Stop sharing and the link stops working.

Do I need an account?

No. Building, exporting and importing a collection all work without one. A free account lets you save decks and keep your collection on any device you sign in on. The privacy page explains what's stored and how to delete it.
